Essex County announced on Apr. 11 that it will hold a Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Day on Saturday, May 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Essex County Department of Public Works, located at 99 W. Bradford Avenue in Cedar Grove, New Jersey.

The collection day aims to provide residents with a safe and free way to dispose of household hazardous materials that should not be thrown out with regular trash. All Essex County residents are eligible to participate but must present proof of residency upon arrival at the site.

Accepted items include aerosol spray paints, automotive fluids such as antifreeze and motor oil, car batteries, chemistry sets, darkroom and photographic chemicals, driveway sealer, home fire extinguishers, fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts, gasoline and kerosene, household cleaning fluids, mercury-containing products, Ni–Cd/rechargeable batteries, oil-based paints and stains, pesticides and herbicides, pool chemicals and barbecue-type propane tanks.

Residents seeking more information about the event can call 973-792-9060 or visit ecuanj.com for details.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts by Essex County to encourage responsible disposal practices among its communities while helping prevent environmental contamination caused by improper handling of hazardous waste.
