New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced on her official Twitter account that the state is preparing to host eight FIFA World Cup matches this summer, including the final. In a series of posts dated April 17, 2026, Sherrill outlined steps her administration is taking to manage transportation and support commuters during the event.
In her first post, Sherrill stated: “New Jersey is ready and excited to host eight FIFA World Cup matches this summer – including the World Cup Final. Since I took office, my Administration has been working to prepare for the biggest sporting event our state has ever seen – and today, NJ TRANSIT released their” (April 17, 2026).
Addressing concerns about public transit disruptions during peak commuting hours, she continued: “I have directed NJ TRANSIT to provide discounts for riders impacted by service changes caused by the FIFA World Cup on Monday, June 22nd and Tuesday, June 30th, the two dates that overlap with peak commuting hours. My Administration is also coordinating closely with PATH to” (April 17, 2026).
Sherrill also acknowledged financial support from tournament organizers: “Ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, we thank @FWC26NYNJ for providing $3.6 million to support discounts and cross-honoring for NJ TRANSIT riders impacted by service changes.” (April 17, 2026).
Mikie Sherrill currently serves in the U.S. Congress representing New Jersey’s 11th district after replacing Rodney Frelinghuysen in 2019. She was born in Alexandria, Virginia in 1972 and resides in Montclair.
