Rep. Mikie Sherrill, U.S. Congresswoman for New Jersey’s 11th district since 2019, addressed recent tragedies involving public service members in a series of posts on July 29, 2025.

In response to a violent incident in New York City, Sherrill posted, “The mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan is gut-wrenching. My heart is with the families of those lost, including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who died protecting others. I’m furious that, once again, someone armed with a weapon of war turned a normal day into a massacre.” (July 29, 2025).

Later that evening, she commemorated Cadet Neil Edara, an Army ROTC student from Ridgewood, New Jersey. Sherrill wrote, “Cadet Edara personified service, as a Boy Scout, an EMT, and a member of the Rutgers Army ROTC battalion. He was an incredible young man and he will be deeply missed.” (July 29, 2025). In another post published at the same time, she added her condolences: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of Cadet Neil Edara, an Army ROTC student from Ridgewood, New Jersey, who tragically lost his life while training at Ft. Knox.” (July 29, 2025).

Mikie Sherrill succeeded Rodney Frelinghuysen in representing New Jersey’s 11th district in Congress beginning in 2019. Born in Alexandria, Virginia in 1972 and currently residing in Montclair at age 51, Sherrill has continued to focus on issues impacting both her home state and the nation.
