Free to use Basketball Hoop in Basketball Court | Markus Spiske
You may know that basketball was invented at the Y, but did you know that the sport of volleyball was invented in 1895 at a YMCA in Holyoke, Mass.? Originally intended as an alternative to basketball for businessmen, the activity has morphed into the second most popular team sport in the world.
In celebration of Womens History Month, the International Volleyball Hall of Fame shared these photos with the Y, to celebrate some of the amazing U.S-based women athletes who have been trailblazers in the sport. These women and the ones before them have created endless opportunities for females across the globe. Learn more about these women and their contributions to the sport at volleyhall.org.
