Rep. Mikie Sherrill, representing New Jersey’s 11th district in the U.S. Congress, has voiced concerns regarding the impact of universal tariffs on Canadian imports and other international goods. Her recent series of tweets addresses potential economic consequences for American families stemming from these trade policies.
On February 1, 2025, Rep. Sherrill tweeted about the anticipated increase in gasoline prices due to tariffs on Canadian crude oil imports. She stated: "You’ll pay more at the pump: We import significant crude oil supplies from Canada, which is then refined into gasoline and sold in the US. Universal tariffs on Canada will raise prices at the pump and make it harder for families to make ends meet."
In another tweet posted on the same day, she highlighted the potential rise in car prices resulting from tariffs affecting North American supply chains. Sherrill noted: "You’ll get priced out of buying a car: Our auto industry relies on imported parts and a highly integrated North American supply chain to remain globally competitive and keep prices low. These tariffs will price working families out of buying a car."
Additionally, Rep. Sherrill addressed concerns over increasing grocery bills due to these policies, specifically citing imported fruits and vegetables as affected commodities. On February 1, she tweeted: "Your grocery bills will go up: In the United States, many of our fruits and vegetables are imported from countries worldwide. Fresh produce like lemons and avocados will become far more expensive because of Trump’s policies."
